Plotting Your Novel

This kickoff week is about your novel’s storyline, timeline, and plot. We’ll discuss all the elements of a great story, and how and when to unveil them.

You’ll learn how to outline your story specifically for your creative style. This proven process of plotting your novel will serve you for the rest of your career.

Week 2

Compelling Characters

Next up, we’ll dive into your story’s characters – how to create backstories, personality types, dialogue, and how to speak from your character’s viewpoint.

These are the essentials to creating emotion-eliciting characters and plot lines.

Week 3

Storytelling and Scenes

Learn the best practices for creating a first page and opening chapter that will enchant readers and get them turning the pages.

By the end of this week, you’ll submit your first chapter for expert editorial review & feedback.

Week 4

Publishing Your Novel

Let’s talk about everything PUBLISHING!

There are so many things to consider: copyrights, pseudonyms, and the financials of traditional vs self-publishing. At the end of this week, you’ll have your publishing plan and timeline all mapped out.

Week 5

Marketing Your Novel

Learn about (and make!) the 4 major marketing decisions about your novel.

We’ll dive into branding, messaging, and social media, and you’ll develop your pre-release promo plan which will perfectly complement your publishing plan and timeline.

Week 6

Improving Your Writing

Learn how to avoid the most common (and disastrous) writing mistakes rookie authors make, so your first drafts are even better.

We’ll also guide you through our tried-and-true rewriting and self-editing process. You’ll also be working 1-1 with an expert editor on your first 10,000 words.

Week 7

Staying Inspired & Productive

With the foundations laid for your successful first novel, we’ll dive into more of the mindset, motivations, and stumbling blocks of turning “authoring” into your full-time profession.

You’ll submit your marketing and publishing plans to the team for review, and get all your final questions answered.

In your hands, you’ll have your publishing route and timelines, your marketing and pre-launch plan, and the first 10,000 words of your novel professionally edited.

What people are saying

I definitely enjoyed my Boot Camp experience! The most valuable component for me was getting feedback from two editors. I'm currently working on a new project, but I would take part in the Boot Camp all over again, as I did find it to be insightful and valuable.

This training you have provided far exceeds anything I have done before. I’ve never been able to get a book started based on previous training. With what I have learned from you, I am almost 10,000 words into a story I have been trying to write for years!

The camp really gave me the motivation that I needed and a schedule and focus to my writing. It was the first time I had instruction on how to build characters and improve my scenes and my writing really improved. It was also my first experience working with an editor, and I really connected with one of them and plan to use them on my future books. My new book (which I just finished final edits on and am publishing soon) is so much better than my first attempt and I now have a clear path on my next steps to take and what I need to do to help it succeed.

Boot Camp was a great experience. The structure was perfect and it gave a lot of amazing information. The best thing I got out of boot camp was a new group of friends.

Yes! Carving out time to be an author is hard for almost everyone. This program will require about 6 hours a week of your time. Most of our Boot Campers have full-time jobs. If publishing your first novel is one of the biggest goals in your life right now, then you absolutely have to make time for yourself.

You can choose from a 1-time investment of $697 or 4 monthly installments of $175.

Your investment includes twice-weekly Q&A sessions, professional editing of your writing, a video training course, and a supportive community.

You can absolutely write, publish, and market your book without any help, or just using assorted free trainings out there. To be frank, it will most likely take you quite a bit longer though.

Yes! If you join Boot Camp 2024 and don’t think it’s a fit for you, simply request a full refund within the first 3 weeks of the program.

All live Q&As will be recorded and available to watch at any time from your member portal. You’ll have access for 6 years to all training and Q&A sessions.

You will have three different editorial sessions with three different editors.

In the first session, you would submit your plot outline and your first chapter and get developmental-level feedback on the plot and first chapter.

The second round of editorial feedback would be on a 10,000-word excerpt. Most campers choose to submit their first 10,000 words, but you could submit a different portion of your novel if you wanted to. This round is more focused on helping you with your storytelling skills and scene writing.

The last round is another 10,000-word excerpt and can be the same excerpt or a different one since you will be working with a different editor. That round is also focused on your storytelling and writing style.

You will send your excerpts to the editors, who are all professionals and covered under our contract. You also have the option to submit your work to your fellow campers in critique circles Some campers choose to participate in that and some do not. It is completely up to you.

Typically, around a quarter of our campers have already finished their first draft when they attend the camp. Some of them already have one or two books that are written but not yet published. The rest are starting fresh. We just ask that you come to camp with an idea and we will help you flesh it out.
